The White Stag

"I was here at the beginning; I will remain 'til the end."

This is the first time I've attempted a painting with watercolours: I know it is very candy-cane coloured, but I'm actually quite happy and want to learn much more!

White stags are a a rare variation of common deer, born with leucism. I have always loved them and find it interesting that to this day they remain a very powerful spiritual animal. I've heard that it is considered bad luck to hunt one down and many modern hunters and wood rangers will outright refuse to do so.

• White deer hold a place in the mythlogy of many cultures.
• The Celtic people considered them to be messengers from the otherworld.
• Arthurian legend states that the creature has a perennial ability to evade capture, and that the pursuit of the animal represents mankind's spiritual quest.
• It also signalled that the time was nigh for the knights of the kingdom to pursue a quest.
